Fuel is a major factor when calculating exactly what a vehicle might cost your business, but it’s not the only one.

We’ve teamed up with our sister company epyx to compare petrol and electric family cars from the same brand to see how they differ in terms of expected mileage, servicing and repair, which doesn’t include body, damage or tyres.

Of course, there are many other factors associated with total cost of ownership such as funding, tax and insurance, but these can be quite particular to each fleet, vehicle or driver.

Our figures from the epyx database represent the average values for vehicles which have been on the road for more than three years, and we’re only looking at the first three years of the chosen models. We’ve not included a diesel version because in company car fleets now, registrations are too low to ensure similar use cases for an accurate comparison.

epyx data shows the average costs of servicing, maintaining and repairing these vehicles over three years

Both the petrol and electric models average fairly similar mileage over the period, with electric models doing around 20% less distance, but even with the lower mileage factored in the electric variant is considerably cheaper, by around 40%.

Generally, that’s because electric cars in this example are requiring much less servicing and far fewer repairs over a three-year lifecycle for standard wear and tear. With downtime an important factor in many fleets’ operational effectiveness, this may well be important.

What will happen though when they are doing higher mileages, require more servicing and higher wear occurs is yet to be determined. Of course, costs will also vary depending on the model and usage profile, but as the picture of EV SMR builds even more completely, we will analyse the data and report back.
