Average cost for petrol and diesel:

After lows in the early summer, petrol prices are slowly climbing. But overall this year, the story has been stability with prices not dropping out of the 130s in 2025, peaking at 139.0 in February and dropping to 132.5p in May. However, prices are slightly higher than autumn 2024 already so they may break into the 140s later in the winter.

In our first ever AllCosts report, looking at prices in late 2023, the average cost of a litre of diesel was 161p. With rates stable at around 139p now, the savings for a fleet compared to nearly two years ago are remarkable.

A 100 vehicle fleet doing 200,000 miles a month at 35mpg would have had a fuel bill of approximately £42,000 then, and £36,000 now – £6,000 a month less.

Despite crude oil prices remaining low, diesel prices have climbed quite quickly in the last few months of Q3. In May the average cost of a litre was 138.8 but it climbed after that, albeit with a slight drop in September to 142.2p after a high of 142.4p in August. Does this signal prices are going to fall in Q4? As we mentioned in our Executive Summary, oil prices are predicted to drop over the next few months, but whether this has an effect on the forecourt remains to be seen.
