Average cost for petrol and diesel:

The average price of petrol rose slightly through the Winter for 2024, but only by about 1.5p per litre, according to our analysis of prices across the UK.

It’s still good news for businesses though, with a 60-litre tank costing about £6.50 less to fill than six months ago.

Forecasts for the year ahead remain mixed. Analysts suggest there is global oversupply of oil, which should keep prices lower, but with GBP at its weakest for a year, inflation refusing to fall and the unknowns of global factors such as politics and the Ukraine war, prices remaining low can’t be taken for granted.

There was a marked drop in the price of diesel during the final quarter of the year, falling by nearly 11p from the previous period’s level. Compared to the start of the year, the difference in the cost of diesel is even more marked: we reported in AllCosts in early 2024 that diesel averaged 158.5p per litre. A van doing 3,000 miles and 35mpg in January 2024 would have cost £618 in diesel. Last month, by comparison, the bill would have dropped to £546.

Average cost for petrol and diesel:

Over the summer the average cost of petrol has remained at a similar level to the price in early 2024.

But the average cost masks some large price fluctuations over the period. In spring, average prices peaked at 149p with some forecourts charging up to 161p.

Yet by September, the average had dropped to 136p with 124p being the lowest; theoretically a vehicle with a 60-litre tank could have cost up to £97 to fill in April, but only £75 in September.

It proves that shopping around and having a planned fleet management strategy is still very important if fleets want to minimise costs.
